Post-Editing

of Machine Translation

Machine Translation (MT) has advanced significantly within the last couple of years. Ten years ago, nobody would have thought that a machine could be able to produce a more less useful translation. Now, with Neuronal Machine Translation we are able to generate somewhat good translations just by clicking on a button. But we may still not leave out the human factor. We are still needed to edit the translations generated by the engine. It is still not able to foresee all nuances of language und underlying messages, for example. Also, MT is not a suitable solution for all subject areas.

Now, post-editing combines the advantages MT has to offer with the irreplaceable expertise of us humans. The engine will produce a rough translation, a first draft. The translator will then edit this draft so that in the end there will be a product that, hopefully, shows all quality features of a human translation. But we shall always keep in mind that time is an essential aspect that defines the level of quality that can be achieved in the final product.
